XK Detect X380 Overview
The XK Detect X380 is designed for aerial photography purposes. Its entire construction is aimed towards ensuring that capturing pictures and videos from the air is as smooth as possible and that’s why it is also referred to as the flying camera.
For a drone made for aerial photography, it was rather strange to learn that it doesn’t come with any camera and instead, you are forced to purchase a camera separately and mount it yourself. How does this affect its performance? In our review of this drone, we did find some useful features and every drone enthusiast would enjoy having but there were also a few mishaps. Here is everything you need to know about the XK Detect X380.
The XK Detect X380 is designed in an X-shape and covered with a solid plastic body. This high-quality plastic has a high melting point that protects it against wearing out due to the heat generation in the battery and motor. The plastic also does a good job in protecting the drone against extreme sunlight and keeping the interior gadgets within a safe temperature.
This drone measure 30.5cm by 30.5cm by 21cm which is well within the normal size of most drones. It weighs 2.094 pounds placing it below the FAA regulations and hence you won’t have to register it. As you can notice it’s a bit too big and this will require you to be extra careful in controlling it. Bear in mind that the 2,094 pounds weight isn’t inclusive of the camera. When you add your camera the load will increase and this reduces the flight time and speeds. It’s therefore, in your best interest that when you go shopping for a camera you don’t just get one with good video qualities but you should also be mindful of its weight to avoid affecting the drone’s performance.
One good feature about the designing is how accurate the rotors are from each other. This helps in keeping the flight pattern accurate and balanced and you will find this useful when conducting aerial photography.
XK Detect X380 is powered by an 11.1V 5400mAh 20C Lithium-ion battery that takes around 2 hours to charge. This battery allows the drone to enjoy a flight time of around 30 minutes without a camera. Once you add a camera, depending on the weight of the camera the flight time can be reduced by up to 10 minutes.
The battery is removable and this allows you to switch different batteries and continue flying. You could also take advantage of the relatively big battery compartment to get a more powerful battery that will extend your flight time. You should, however, do your math to make sure that with the extra weight of adding a bigger battery you are still able to enjoy longer flights otherwise you could end up with a more powerful battery which is unfortunately too heavy thus dragging the drone down.
This drone uses a mode 2 transmitter controller running on a 2.4GHz frequency. This remote controller has six channels with a decent control range of 1000 meters thanks to the antenna connection.
The controller has several buttons and levers which may seem too much if you are a newbie. On the left are direction and throttle controls while on the right is an aileron and elevator gear. There are also more buttons on top and at the bottom of the controller. There is a “Return Home” button at the top right of the controller which helps to bring the drone closer to the transmitter. At the bottom is a landing and takeoff button that helps in making sure that the drone lands or take off evenly. There is another dedicated button that allows you to toggle between stick modes.
You can also regulate the gimbal’s positions through a radial button found to the right side of the LCD.
The controller has an LCD screen that relays vital information. We found the whole appearance and display quality of this LCD a bit poor. It isn’t flashy and is also quite small.
The controller is powered by six 1.5V AA batteries.
XK Detect X380 performs well in the air. The balance in weight and distance between the rotors has played a big role in keeping the drone stable in the air. The built-in GPS also makes it much easier for the drone to identify the starting point making the return-home flight effortless.
The only issue we had here which was shared by other users online is its performance in windy weather. When hit by wind controlling this drone could become almost impossible. Some even complained of the drone flipping over by itself in even when the weather wasn’t that harsh.
It’s hence, a bit unpredictable how this drone will perform when there is a slight change in weather condition.
The XK Detect X380 packaging comes with:
- A wrench
- 2 pairs of propellers
- A 2.4GHz mode 2 transmitter
- Battery charger and EU adapter
- 1V 5400mAh Li-Po battery
- A USB charger cable
The XK Detect X380-C is another quality drone that allows you to take quality aerial photos and videos without a huge price tag.
You will still get many of the same advanced features as some of its higher end competitors with just a few drawbacks.
Keep reading to see if this could be your next drone.
Who Makes The XK detect x380?
XK is a drone manufacturing brand which is owned by the XK Industrial Co. Ltd. It is the sister company of a reputable drone manufacturing company named WL Toys.
The WL Toys created and released the VS03 drone couple of years ago which was the closest rival of DJI’s Phantom 2.
It also has synonymous features as the Phantom 2 minus the hefty price and complicated navigating system.
XK Detect X380-C was manufactured using the same design as with VS03 but with a modified and upgraded system. Just like its past version, the Detect X380-C served as DJI’s Phantom 3 Standard closest rival.
It may not have the best navigating system, but its simplicity, stability, and hot features minus the hefty price made it as a top choice beginner’s drone.
XK Detect X380-C Review Description
The XK Detect X380-C is a stable quadcopter which makes it a perfect drone for kids. It may have lesser GPS Waypoint navigation as compared to its closest counterpart.
Which is the DJI Phantom 3 Standard but it has all the basic navigation system and hot features.
The common bells and whistles aren’t necessary for young drone fliers because it will just confuse them and this could overpower the fun part. Kid pilots should have more fun but too much technicalities could ruin the fun part.
Why create agony if you could experience the same hype and exciting experience with something basic, yet reliable?
XK Detect X380 Follow Me
Unlike Phantom 3 Standard, Detect X380-C does not require time-consuming calibration. The X380 has a pretty simple landing and takeoff process in just a press of a button which is perfect for young pilots.
It also has the “Follow Me” GPS feature which suits best with aerial photography enthusiasts and millennials who love to take a bunch of selfies. It also boasts its Return Home function which is a great help in case of lost drone orientation.
The C380-C may not have all the bells of whistles and the latest autonomous features that its best rival offers, but it excels in terms of practicality. Upgraded GPS navigating system could be beneficial to authorities but for a kid hobbyist, these features mean nothing.
XK Detect X380 GPS Quadcopter Drone
When choosing a drone, the flight quality is the decision changer. As with the case of C380-C, it flies with stability and precision.
Though its flight performance is highly designed for aerial photography, this mechanism suits perfectly to unstable flyers which are common among kid pilots.
This stable flyer is equipped with an integrated barometer pressure sensor and GPS module which accurately reads the drone’s current altitude within its .5 meter range and lets it fly within your desired altitude stably even under moderate wind velocity.
XK Detect X380 Propellers
Another key feature of the C380-C that makes it a stable flyer is its brilliant propulsion system.
Which is mainly comprised of top grade 2212 950KV brushless motors combined into each of its 9-inch powerful propeller blades. Its motors use powerful magnets which makes it highly responsive to the controller.
Altitude Hold Function
Discover XK Detect X380-C flying stability by using its self-centering throttle stick from the transmitter and using its Altitude hold function.
The throttle stick basically lies in the 50% range which means that it will stably hover in the same accurate altitude.
But you can push it upward if you want to go higher or pull the stick down if you want it to go down.
This allows you to let go of the throttle stick and take aerial pictures. The throttle stick will remain in its current setting while your drone will hover at the same altitude as instructed by the throttle stick.
The XK Detect X380-C also boasts its Headless Mode which basically teaches young flyers and beginners to pilot a drone with ease and safety.
This is also applicable whenever you lost orientation of your drone. But what is Headless Mode?
For beginners who are trying to grasp the unique drone language, Headless Mode is the feature which allows you to easily maneuver your drone. Regardless of where its front is facing.
When you turn the headless mode on, the drone will follow the transmitters function.
Thus if you switch the mover the stick to the left, the drone will also fly towards the left.
XK Detect X380 Camera
The XK Detect X380-C is equipped with a 2 axis brushless gimbal and a camera system which absolutely does the job perfectly. Though it’s not one of the best in the market, it serves its purpose.
The 4 rubber dampers and plastic rails that hold the gimbal helps eliminates vibrations. You may adjust the gimbal’s pitch angle by using the adjustment buttons in the transmitter.
