Who Is Holy Stone?
You’ll see Holy Stone’s name quite a few times on our website and for good reason. Unlike some of the other companies that make drones, Holy Stone specializes in drones.
They started their company in 2014 and while they do sell one toy car then Focus most of their efforts on quadcopters.
Holy Stone also prides itself in its customer service and you will see them responding to many of the complaints in the reviews often sending replacement parts or drones to dissatisfied customers.
This should make you feel better about purchasing one of their products knowing that they stand behind them.
Holy Stone HS170 Review – Description
As we mentioned this tiny drone packs a big punch with the following features:
- headless driving mode
- 2.4 gigahertz technology
- 6-axis gyro stabilization
- 50 mm range
- 8 minute flying time
- 80 minute charging time
The headless flying mode really helps the learning curve for beginners. It allows you to fly the drone in the same direction as the remote joysticks regardless of which direction the drone is actually facing.
You can also easily switch this on or off so has your child begins to become more advanced, they can test out their skills by turning this off.
The 2.4-gigahertz wavelength is pretty common for most drone remotes so you don’t actually lose anything here by purchasing this less expensive model. This helps the drone have a strong connection with the remote so that you don’t lose it while fine.
The 6-axis gyro is also pretty standard for most of these drones so this is another feature that you’re not really losing out on. The gyro helps stabilize the drone while in flight.
The range and battery is where you start to see a lower performance come into play. You only have about a 30 to 50 meter range with this drone where’s if you paid a little bit more you can find drones with up to 100m range.
The battery is only rated for 6 to 8 minutes where some hire end drones could last 10 or more minutes. It also has a fairly long charge time for having a battery that doesn’t last as long at 80 minutes.
As an added bonus, since this drone is smaller, it weighs less than the half pound limit so you will not have to register it with the FAA.
Probably the biggest drop in features from their higher end models is the lack of a camera. When flying the drones many users enjoy being able to see their recorded footage and pictures however, you will not be able to do that with this drone.
However, if you have multiple kids they will be able to fly at the same time because they are built with an anti-interference system that allows them to fly near each other with separate remotes.
As you can imagine the other complaints talk about how cheap is drone seems or seem to be from people who did not take the time to read the instruction manual before their first flight.
It cannot be stressed enough to really take the time and learn how to fly to strong before you take it outside. You should even practice inside your house before doing that.
Many of the happiest customers are those who spent a good amount of time practicing inside before going outside.
Holy Stone HS170 Review – Spare Parts
Whether you are buying this for yourself or for your kids, one of the best things you can do upon purchasing is buy spare parts kit.
Some manufacturers offer these kids with multiple parts in it and others sell parts separately. If you are new to flying a drone or even if you are experienced, you will know that replacing parts is routine maintenance.
Inevitably, your drone will crash and you will break propeller that you will have to replace. The motors are also not meant to last a very long time because they have to be so lightweight, which means they will need to be replaced as well.
Fortunately, they are relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of the drone and if you buy them when you buy your drone, it will limit the down time for when you have to replace the part.
From there you can simply reorder parts as you use them.
Holy Stone HS170 Review – Where To Buy?
We normally recommend Amazon when shopping online as they usually have the cheapest prices and are one of the most secure websites.
They also allow you to easily and quickly compare different drone models you may be looking at, as well as see what type of extra batteries or replacement parts you can buy at the same time.
Like we mentioned earlier they’re also over 2,800 reviews that you can free to your heart’s content to see if you really want to buy this drone or not. They’re not all super helpful but many of them offer user tips and insight that you might not see anywhere else.
Holy Stone HS170 Review Conclusion
Just to reiterate, this Holy Stone HS170 Predator mini drone could be a great first choice if you’re looking to buy yourself or your child a drone for not a lot of money.
You will still be able to have a ton of fun and you don’t actually lose too many features. The main one that you don’t get is the camera obviously, so if that is important to you, you may need to shop around and look at other drones.
However, this could be a great entry level drones you hone your skills before spending money on a more expensive one.
